Early life and backgroundLokumarakkalage Dilshan Madushanka was born on 18 September 2000 in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. He grew up in a family with limited financial means; his father worked as a fisherman and his mother was a homemaker. Dilshan attended Hungama Vijayaba Central College in Hungama, where his initial exposure to cricket came from watching older boys play. The experience inspired him to join the school side, despite the school lacking resources and a full first-XI program. Equipment shortages were common in his early playing days, and he has recounted borrowing shoes and relying on used match balls for practice.
Dilshan has two brothers: an elder brother, Sudesh Nirmal, who is also involved in cricket, and a younger brother, Nipun, who was a student at the time of the excerpt. His early coaches and local coaching camps helped him progress from district and provincial cricket into the national youth setup.
Career
Dilshan is a left-arm fast bowler who bats right-handed. He first drew broader attention after performances in youth and provincial cricket and was selected for Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2020 Under-19 World Cup. During the tournament he took a five-wicket haul in a plate quarter-final match against Nigeria. He made his first-class debut for Colts Cricket Club on 13 March 2020 in the Premier League Tournament.
Domestic and franchise cricket followed. In October 2020 he was signed by Dambulla Viiking ahead of the inaugural Lanka Premier League and made his T20 debut for the side on 9 December 2020. He later played for Galle Gladiators and was picked by Jaffna Kings for the 2022 and 2023 editions of the LPL. During the 2023 LPL auction Jaffna Kings acquired him for US $92,000, a sum that made him the most expensive player in that tournament. He has also represented Durban’s Super Giants in some matches.
Internationally, Dilshan debuted in T20 Internationals on 27 August 2022 against Afghanistan. He made his ODI debut for Sri Lanka on 10 January 2023 against India in Guwahati, where he claimed his first ODI wicket by dismissing Rohit Sharma. His Test debut came on 24 July 2023 against Pakistan at Colombo (SSC). Prior to that Test appearance, he had been named in several Sri Lanka Test squads across 2020–2022.
In limited-overs cricket Dilshan played a significant role in Sri Lanka’s qualification for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup by taking three wickets apiece against Zimbabwe and the Netherlands in the qualifier matches. At the 2023 World Cup he recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in an ODI against India on 2 November 2023, becoming the fourth Sri Lankan to take a five-for at a World Cup.
Franchise movement continued into the Indian Premier League: at the 2024 IPL auction held in December 2023 he was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs. 4.60 crore.
Public profile
Dilshan’s rise from a resource-poor background to international cricket has been a recurring theme in interviews. He has spoken about his family’s initial reservations about his cricketing ambitions, particularly his father’s reluctance, and how support from others helped him continue. His bowling performances against high-profile batsmen, including dismissals of established players in Asia Cup and other internationals, have increased his public profile.
He wears jersey number 98 for Sri Lanka and has been associated with domestic teams including Colts Cricket Club and Sri Lanka A. Hashan P. Baduge is noted as his first coach.
