Early life and background

Lokuge Dinesh Chandimal was born on 18 November 1989 in Balapitiya, Sri Lanka. He grew up in the same town and attended Dharmasoka College in Ambalangoda, where he began to attract attention as a talented young cricketer. As a teenager he experienced the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that devastated his family’s home; he continues to return to Balapitiya and reflects on that event in his life.

Chandimal developed his cricketing skills in school and by 2008 had been appointed captain of his school’s first eleven. That season his leadership and batting dominated the local circuit and laid the foundation for his professional career.

Career

Chandimal’s progress through the youth ranks translated into senior opportunities at domestic and international level. He has been associated with Nondescripts Cricket Club since 2009 and has represented Ruhuna in domestic competitions. His domestic franchise experience includes a spell with Rajasthan Royals during the 2012 Indian Premier League and a later appearance for Chittagong Vikings in 2017.

He made his international Twenty20 debut on 30 April 2010 against New Zealand at Providence Stadium in Guyana, followed by his One Day International debut on 1 June 2010 against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Chandimal’s first Test match came on 26 December 2011 against South Africa at Kingsmead.

A left-to-right combination of timing and aggression has defined much of his batting. His favourite strokes include the cover drive and the pull shot. Chandimal achieved early recognition when he became the youngest Sri Lankan to score an international century after his hundred against India in Harare in 2010. That maiden ODI century cemented his place in the national side and is frequently cited as a turning point in his career.

In the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Chandimal produced a rapid half-century against Australia at Sydney, reaching fifty off 22 balls — the fastest World Cup fifty by a Sri Lankan batsman at the time. He also holds the joint record for the most catches by a fielder in a single T20 International, sharing that mark with several other players.

Across franchise and provincial competitions, Chandimal has worn several jersey numbers, representing Sri Lanka with number 36 and appearing with number 17 in the IPL. In March 2018 he was named captain of the Colombo squad for the Super Four Provincial Tournament, reflecting his leadership standing in domestic cricket.

Public profile

Chandimal’s public image combines on-field achievements with a straightforward personal life. He is often referred to by the nickname “Chandi.” He follows Buddhism and lists non-vegetarian food among his preferences; favourite dishes include coconut sambal, fried dry anchovy sprats, fish and steamed jackfruit. Away from cricket he enjoys listening to music, watching movies and travelling.

He married Ishika Jayasekara on 1 May 2015. The couple had been publicly linked prior to their marriage. Chandimal comes from a family with three brothers.

Controversies and notable incidents

In June 2018 Chandimal was involved in a ball-tampering incident during a match against the West Indies and was charged by the ICC. He denied deliberately altering the ball, explaining that a sweet in his pocket had been mistaken for the application of an artificial substance.

Latest updates

Chandimal continues to be active in domestic cricket and has represented Nondescripts Cricket Club since 2009. His playing career includes international appearances across formats and participation in franchise competitions such as the IPL and the Bangladesh Premier League.

He remains one of Sri Lanka’s recognised middle-order batting options, known for his attacking intent and capacity to change the tempo of an innings.
