Early life and background

Dinesh Gundu Rao was born on 9 October 1969 in Kushalanagar, then part of Mysore State (now Karnataka). He is the son of R. Gundu Rao, who served as Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1980 to 1983, and Varalakshmi Gundu Rao. Dinesh attended Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bangalore and went on to earn a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communications from B.M.S. College of Engineering, Bengaluru, completing his degree in 1992.

Dinesh is the second of three sons. His elder brother Mahesh Gundu Rao has been active in politics, while his younger brother Rajesh Gundu Rao worked as an actor under the screen name Ajay before his death in 2012. Dinesh married Tabassum (Tabu) Rao on 16 December 1994. The couple have two daughters, Ananya Rao and Ameera Rao.

Career

Dinesh Gundu Rao began his political work with the Indian National Congress in 1994, initially serving in youth-wing roles including a brief period as working president of the Youth Congress and subsequently as general secretary. He built his base through grassroots organising and contested state assembly elections from the Gandhi Nagar constituency in Bengaluru.

He was first elected as Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gandhi Nagar in 1999 and has been re-elected from the same constituency repeatedly — in 2004, 2008, 2013, 2018 and again in 2023. His legislative career includes a stint in state government as Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs in the Siddaramaiah cabinet between 20 May 2015 and 21 June 2016.

Beyond ministerial office, Dinesh served as President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee from 4 July 2018 until 11 March 2020. In September 2020 he took on organisational responsibility at the national level when he was named in-charge of the All India Congress Committee for Goa, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu.
