Dinesh Kumar was born on 16 June 1977 in Ranchi, Jharkhand. He attended St. John's High School in Ranchi and later studied at Ranchi University. Career

Dinesh Kumar is a competitive lawn bowler who has represented India at multiple international events. He has been part of the Indian contingent at several editions of the Commonwealth Games: he competed in the triples in 2010, in both the pairs and fours in 2014, and in the triples and fours in 2018.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games the Indian men's fours team performed strongly in section play, topping their section before losing the bronze-medal playoff to Australia. Four years later, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Indian men's fours side won their section (Section B) but were eliminated in the quarter-finals and did not reach the podium.

Kumar took part in the 2020 World Outdoor Bowls Championship held in Australia. In 2019 he won a bronze medal in the triples at the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

His most prominent achievement to date came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he and his teammates Navneet Singh, Chandan Kumar Singh and Sunil Bahadur earned a silver medal in the men's fours. The Indian quartet reached the final at Victoria Park, Royal Leamington Spa, and finished as runners-up to England.
