Early life and background
Dinesh Phadnis was born on 2 November 1966 in Bihar and spent his formative years in Mumbai. He completed his schooling at Chogle High School in Borivali East and later earned a diploma in mechanical engineering. He maintained an interest in writing throughout his life, composing poems and short stories alongside his work in film and television.

Career
Phadnis built a multifaceted career as an actor and writer in Hindi cinema and television, with occasional work in Marathi projects. He made his Bollywood debut in Sarfarosh (1999) and appeared in the song sequence “Mela Dilon Ka” in the 2000 film Mela. He worked opposite Suniel Shetty in Officer (2001) and later had a role in Super 30 (2019), which starred Hrithik Roshan.

On television, Phadnis became a household name for portraying Inspector Fredericks, often called Freddy, on the long-running crime series CID broadcast on Sony Entertainment Television. He inhabited the role for nearly two decades, appearing on the show between 1998 and 2018. Beyond acting, he contributed as a co-writer on some CID episodes, collaborating with writers such as Sriram Raghavan. He also appeared in episodes of other Sony shows, including the horror anthology Aahat, and made guest appearances in Adaalat (2012) and the sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (2014).

Phadnis’s television credits extended to the crime series CIF (2019) on Dangal TV, where he played Constable Shambhu Tawde. His stage and screen work included portrayals of historical figures; on one occasion he took on the role of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. In addition to film and television acting, he wrote for at least one Marathi film and several Hindi film projects.

On 4 December 2023, Phadnis was admitted to Tunga Hospital in Mumbai where he received treatment for liver damage and required ventilator support. He passed away in the early hours of 5 December 2023 at the age of 57. Several reports attributed his death to multiple organ failure. His funeral was held later that day at the Daulat Nagar crematorium in Mumbai.
