Early life and background

Dipen Raval was born on 18 June in Ahmedabad, India, where he continues to be based. After finishing his graduation he initially worked as a pharmacist, but left that profession to pursue his long‑held interest in acting. He is Hindu by religion and is married to Sweta Raval. Their son is named Manjish Raval. He is the son of Navin and Bhavana Raval and has a brother, Miten Raval.

Career

Raval began his performing career on stage. He took part in numerous theatre productions, appearing in plays such as Paankh Vina Na Patangiya, Ekla Chalo Re, Tame Josh Ma To Ame Honsh Ma, Vikalp, Salo Karave Gotalo and Wife Chhe To Life Chhe. He also worked behind the scenes as a director for the play Salo Karave Gotalo. His stage work brought early recognition: in 2014 he received a Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in the play Chitralekha in Mumbai, and in 2017 he was honoured with a Best Actor award from Samast Gujarat Brahm Samaj.

Raval crossed into screen work in the mid‑2010s. His film debut in the Gujarati market came with Juvenile Delinquents, released on Vimeo in September 2016. That same year he appeared in the Gujarati comedy films Grand Hali and Navri Bazar. In 2017 he was seen as Billubhai in Bhanwar and later took roles in Ratanpur (2018), Locked in Lockdown and Fee on Fire Revenge (2022).

On television and digital platforms, Raval’s screen credits include a role in the Hindi web series Modi: Journey of a Common Man on Eros Now (March 2019), and an appearance as a judge on the Hindi crime show Savdhaan India: India Fights Back in April 2017. In July 2020 he and his wife created, acted in and directed the comedy web series Wife Mari 5G for YouTube, a short‑form project about husband‑wife dynamics. He also served as an invited judge for a theatre event held by Gujarat Technological University at a Polytechnic College in Ahmedabad in September 2019.

Raval has been active on Gujarati television as well. In January 2022 he acted in two Colors Gujarati serials: Sorath Ni Mrs Singham as Vikramsinh and Prem Ni Bhavai as Mukulesh Inamdar.

Breakthrough and notable film work

A significant milestone in Raval’s screen career came with the Pan Nalin‑directed Gujarati film Chhello Show (English title: Last Film Show), in which he played the role of Bapuji. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2021 and was selected by the Film Federation of India in September 2022 as India’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 95th Academy Awards. Raval has spoken about his character in the film as a father with an evolving understanding of his son’s aspirations. During its shoot in Dhari, Amreli District, Gujarat, the production encountered challenging conditions, including heavy rain and the unusual presence of lions entering the set.

In 2022 he also played a lawyer, Rahul Shastri, in Bawari: The Silence of Women and appeared in a commercial for the brand Super Doco.
