Early life and background

Dipendra Singh Airee was born in Gajjar, Mahendranagar, in Kanchanpur district and grew up in Mahendranagar. He attended Cosmopolitan English Medium School in Bhimdatta Nagar and later studied at Far-Western University, Mahendranagar. Raised in a Hindu household, Airee is known by several nicknames including Dipen, Dipu, Dipi and Tiger.

He developed an interest in cricket at a young age, playing his first school-level tournament in seventh grade. At one stage he considered a career in the armed forces, but cricket became his focus when he accepted an invitation to play in the Nepal Premier League while he was in the 11th grade.

Career

Airee began his playing career as a fast bowler but moved to off-spin after recurring injuries curtailed his pace. He represented Nepal at youth level, including the 2016 Under-19 World Cup, and captained the Nepal Under-19 side at the 2017 Under-19 Asia Cup.

He made his T20 international debut for Nepal on 29 July 2018 and his One Day International debut on 1 August 2018, both against the Netherlands. His List A debut came on 11 March 2018 against Kenya, and his first-class debut was on 6 November 2019 versus the Marylebone Cricket Club.

A right-handed middle-order batter and right-arm off-break bowler, Airee has represented numerous domestic and franchise sides: Nepal Police Club, Nepal Under-19, Chitwan Tigers, Expert Dhangadi Blues, Rupandehi Paltans, CYC Attariya, Lumbini All-Stars and Montreal Tigers among them. He played for Chitwan Tigers in the 2018 Everest Premier League, Expert Dhangadi Blues in the 2018 Pokhara Premier League, Rupandehi Paltans in the 2019 Tilottama Premier League, CYC Attariya in the 2019 Dhangadhi Premier League, Lumbini All-Stars in the inaugural Nepal T20 League in 2022 and joined the Montreal Tigers for the 2023 Global T20 Canada.

Airee has produced several landmark performances for Nepal. He scored his first ODI century on 6 March 2022 with 105 against Papua New Guinea and recorded his first ODI half-century on 14 November 2022 against the United Arab Emirates. In T20 internationals he registered his first half-century on 20 April 2021 (60 against the Netherlands) and his first T20I century on 2 April 2022, an unbeaten 110 against Malaysia.

He has shown his bowling capability as well, taking four wickets for 18 runs against Papua New Guinea on 4 April 2022 and recording figures of 3 for 18 versus the United Arab Emirates on 6 March 2023. In 2022 he set a national milestone by becoming the first Nepali player to cross 1,000 T20I runs and finished that year as Nepal’s leading run-scorer in T20Is with 626 runs.

Airee has also set and contributed to partnership records for Nepal, including the highest fifth-wicket and seventh-wicket T20I partnerships for the country.

One of the most widely noted moments of his career came at the 19th Asian Games on 27 September 2023, when he produced a record-breaking T20I innings against Mongolia: an unbeaten 52 off 10 balls featuring eight sixes and a fifty completed in nine deliveries, setting a new mark for the fastest fifty in T20 internationals and achieving an extraordinary strike rate in that innings.

Public profile

Airee has been recognized in rankings and awards: he became the first Nepali to appear on a T20I ranking in April 2023 and moved up the ICC T20I all‑rounder list during 2023. He received a bronze medal at the 13th South Asian Games in March 2019 and earned nominations and honours such as an ICC Player of the Month nomination in March 2022 and the Cricketer of the Year Award at NCCS CPAN in 2022. Local governments awarded him cash prizes in March 2023.

Off the field, he has had commercial partnerships. In February 2018 he was signed by Global IME Bank Ltd for a year, a deal that included a cricket kit and a monthly stipend. Adidas began sponsoring him in September 2021 on a two-year arrangement. He is also employed by the Nepal Police.

Airee has experienced injury setbacks, including a high-grade ATFL tear in his right ankle in September 2021 that required rest and rehabilitation and at times ruled him out of series. Cricket administration matters have affected his leadership roles: he was appointed vice-captain of Nepal in November 2019 and later removed from that role in December 2021 following a dispute over contract grading that led the Cricket Association of Nepal to cite code of conduct concerns.
