Early life and background
Divya Deshmukh was born on 9 December 2005 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She grew up in a family with medical professionals: both her parents are doctors. Divya attended Bhavans Bhagwandas Purohit Vidya Mandir in Nagpur. From a young age she was encouraged toward intellectual and sporting pursuits; her father played chess as a hobby and introduced her to the game. She won her first prize in chess at age five.

Divya initially tried other sports but focused on chess early. She began formal coaching at six years old with Rahul Joshi. Outside of chess she enjoys painting, archery and flower breeding, and she is known to be an avid dog lover.

Career
Divya’s junior career featured a steady string of national and international medals across age-group events. Her results include medals at the Asian School Chess Championship, Asian Youth Chess Championships, World Youth and World Cadets events, national school championships and other national age-group tournaments. She represented India at several multi-nation events including the Commonwealth and online team competitions.

Her progress in rating and results led to major milestones in the early 2020s. In 2021 she achieved the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title; reports note she became India’s 21st Woman Grandmaster after securing an International Master norm in Budapest. In March 2022 Divya won the MPL 47th National Women’s Chess Championship, becoming Nagpur’s first senior national women’s champion and the first teenager to claim the title since Koneru Humpy in 2003. Following that national victory she received a cash award from the Maharashtra Chess Association.

Divya has continued to represent India at elite team events. Notably, she participated at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest in 2024, where she contributed to the team’s achievements and was part of the contingent that won the Gaprindashvili Trophy. Her FIDE rating was recorded at 2301 in February 2022.
