Early life and background

Divya Dwivedi was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, in 1981. She grew up in a family with strong ties to law and public service: her father, Rakesh Dwivedi, served as a senior lawyer at the Supreme Court of India, and her maternal and paternal grandfathers held prominent public positions. Dwivedi completed undergraduate and graduate studies in Delhi, attending Lady Shri Ram College and St. Stephen’s College before earning an M.Phil from the University of Delhi and a doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Career

Dwivedi is a philosopher, author and academician whose research spans ontology, metaphysics, narratology, literary theory and the philosophy of politics. Early in her career she taught on an ad-hoc basis at St. Stephen’s College, and later served as adjunct faculty in the Department of English at Delhi University. She subsequently joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi as an associate professor, where her work covers literature and philosophy.

Her research interests include the philosophy of literature, psychoanalysis, formal inquiry into fictionality, and critical philosophy of caste and race. Dwivedi’s work also engages with political thought — including study of Gandhi — as well as with contemporary concerns such as political cartoons and the novels of O. V. Vijayan. She draws on intellectual currents such as deconstruction and post-metaphysical approaches and cites influences including Jean-Luc Nancy, Bernard Stiegler, Achille Mbembe and Barbara Cassin.

Dwivedi has held international fellowships and appointments. In 2013–14 she was a visiting fellow at the Centre for Fictionality Studies at Aarhus University. In 2017 she joined the committee on Literary Theory at the International Comparative Literature Association. A special issue of the journal Episteme devoted attention to the work she developed with colleague Shaj Mohan in 2021. She was appointed in 2022 to the executive council of the International Society for the Study of Narrative and was a fellow at the Archives Husserl at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris.

Writing and editorial work

Dwivedi has served as co-editor and editor on multiple projects. She co-edited Public Sphere from outside the West (2015) and Narratology and Ideology: Negotiating Context, Form and Theory in Postcolonial Texts (2018). In 2019 she co-authored Gandhi and Philosophy: On Theological Anti-Politics. She edited Virality of Evil (2022) and is a co-founder and editor of the international multilingual journal Philosophy World Democracy.
