Early life and background

Dona Ganguly was born on 22 August 1976 in Behala, Kolkata, into a Bengali family. Raised in Kolkata, she attended Loreto Convent School and developed an affinity for dance very early. Her parents are Sanjeev Roy, a businessman, and Swapna Roy.

Career

Dona began formal dance training as a young child. She first learned from Amala Shankar and then pursued Odissi under Guru Giridhari Nayek. She later trained with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, whose mentorship opened opportunities for stage appearances and skill development.

During the early stages of her career she performed at a number of prominent venues and festivals. Her repertoire includes appearances at Indian events such as the Dover Lane Music Conference, the River Festival in Kolkata, Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, the Beach Festival in Digha and Haldia Utsav. She also represented her art internationally at events including the 15th North American Bengali Conference in New York and the India by the Nile festival in Egypt.

Dona has been recognized by civic authorities abroad: in 1995 the mayor of San Francisco declared 9 June as Dona Roy Day, and she has received honorary citizenship from several U.S. cities including Nashville, Memphis, Los Angeles, Sunnyvale and Pleasanton.

In addition to performing, Dona is an educator and institution-builder. She founded the dance school Diksha Manjari, where she teaches students of different ages. She also heads the Odissi department at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kolkata and at Techno India Schools. Her work has included appearances on Doordarshan.
