Early life and background

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal was born in Rohtak, Haryana, and raised in a family that built a business presence before he entered higher education. His father, Baldev Raj Mittal, established the enterprise that later grew into Lovely Professional University. While his elder brothers shifted their attention to the family’s sweet business, Ashok pursued formal studies, combining daytime work at the family shop with evening college attendance.

He attended Modern High School in Pune before progressing to higher education at institutions including the University Regional Campus in Jalandhar and Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar. He earned an LLB through those university programmes and was later awarded an honorary doctorate by Atal Bihari Vajpayee Vishwavidyalaya, Chhattisgarh.

Career

Mittal’s early entrepreneurial activity included ventures in the automobile sector. In 1991 he entered that market by securing a dealership with Bajaj, and by 1996 he expanded operations to include a Maruti dealership.

While running businesses, Mittal became interested in transforming how education was delivered in India. He opened the Lovely Institute of Management in 2001, initially affiliated with other universities. Finding affiliation restrictive for the kind of educational model he envisioned, he pursued creation of an independent university.

In 2005, after obtaining approval from the Punjab government, he established Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab. Under his leadership as chancellor, LPU focused on industry-relevant curricula and multidisciplinary offerings intended to ready students for the workforce and contribute to broader societal development. The university adopted a tagline that emphasized transforming education as a means to transform India.

LPU’s approach and scale drew national attention. The university received the National Education Excellence Award from ASSOCHAM in 2017 for Best Private University. In 2019 LPU became the first private university to host a visit by the Prime Minister of India. Over time the campus welcomed a range of dignitaries, including former Presidents and Vice Presidents of India, Nobel laureates, and prominent public figures.

Awards and recognition have followed Mittal and the university. Individually, his awards include the Punjab Gaurav Award (2012), the LMA Vardhman Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2013), Shiksha Ratna Award (2013), a Best Manager of the Year accolade from the Socrates Committee in Oxford (2016), National Education Excellence recognition by ASSOCHAM (2017), and an Indian Red Cross Award in 2020.

Political career

Dr. Mittal entered formal politics with the Aam Aadmi Party. In March 2022 he was nominated by the party as one of its candidates for the Rajya Sabha from Punjab. His nomination was confirmed on 24 March 2022, when he became a member of the Upper House.
