Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar was born on 13 September 1978 in Narul-Kalwan, Nashik, Maharashtra. She grew up in the region and is identified with the Scheduled Tribes community. Pawar completed her medical education at NDMVP’s Medical College, Nashik, affiliated with Pune University, earning an MBBS degree before moving into public life.

Career
Pawar’s public career began at the local level. She served as a member of the Nashik Zilla Parishad from 2012 to 2019, where her work emphasized tackling malnutrition and improving access to safe drinking water. She contested the 2014 general election from the Dindori Lok Sabha constituency but was not elected that year.

Originally active with the Nationalist Congress Party, Pawar switched political affiliation in 2019 when she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the 2019 elections she was elected to represent Dindori and subsequently took on responsibilities in parliamentary committees. Between September 2019 and July 2021 she served on the Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare; she was also a member of the Committee on Petitions and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship during that period.

On 7 July 2021, Pawar was appointed Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Government of India, becoming the first woman from Nashik to enter the Union Council of Ministers in that capacity. In December 2023 she was given additional charge of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. In her role at the Health Ministry she has participated in national initiatives related to family planning and maternal-child health. At the National Family Planning Summit in 2022 she presented India’s family planning vision document for 2030 and oversaw the launch of several digital tools and informational materials meant to support family planning services, including a Medical Eligibility Criteria wheel application, a digital family planning archive, and training modules and brochures for frontline health workers.
