Career
Philips is a hepatologist and clinician-scientist whose academic work focuses on sepsis in cirrhosis, faecal microbiota in liver disease, modulation of alcoholic hepatitis and portal hypertension. He has held clinical and advisory roles in Kerala, including senior advisor and medical researcher at the Department of Clinical and Translational Hepatology at the Liver Institute, Center of Excellence in GI Sciences at Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi.
He has also been associated with the Center of Excellence in Microbiome Studies under the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council and served as a clinical consultant and member of the Doctoral Advisory Committee for the Department of Cell and Tissue Culture at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology in Trivandrum.
Philips has contributed more than sixty peer-reviewed research papers covering topics such as fecal microbiota transplantation in severe alcoholic hepatitis, the gut microbiome’s influence on clinical events in alcoholic hepatitis, and case reports linking traditional remedies to liver injury. He has written chapters for medical textbooks and co-authored a book on pancreatic disease released in 2014. In 2017 he delivered the presidential plenary address at the Liver Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in Washington, D.C.
Awards and honours in his career include multiple recognitions from the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), national awards from Indian gastroenterology societies, a gold medal for academic excellence in hepatology presented in January 2019, and more recent honours such as the P. His commentary has led to formal complaints and scrutiny by regulatory or advisory bodies at various times, and legal actions related to statements about commercial products have affected his social media presence on occasion. In at least one instance a state medical council reviewed his explanations and recommended closing a complaint.

His father, Philip Augustine, is a clinical gastroenterologist who introduced endoscopy in India and has been associated with Philip Augustin Associates; his mother, Cicy Philip, has served as an executive director at the same organisation.
