Early life and background

Krishan Kumar Aggarwal was born on 5 September 1958 in New Delhi, India. He grew up in a large family as the seventh child among five brothers and four sisters, raised in a modest one-room home in the Hauz Qazi area of Old Delhi. During his early schooling he attended a Muslim school for first through fourth standards and later ASVJ Higher Secondary School in Daryaganj.

After completing a B.Sc. (Honours) in Zoology at Deshbandhu College, New Delhi, Aggarwal pursued medical training at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS), Sevagram, where he earned his MBBS in 1979 and was recognized as the college's best graduate. He completed an MD in Medicine from Nagpur University in 1983 and later undertook a fellowship in non-invasive cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1987.

Career

Aggarwal built a multifaceted career as a physician, cardiologist and medical educator. Early posts included work as a lecturer at MGIMS and a period at G B Pant Hospital in New Delhi. He trained under notable clinicians in areas such as immunology, mind–body medicine and echocardiography, and soon moved into clinical practice and leadership roles in New Delhi hospitals.

He was involved in pioneering clinical practices in India. In 1984, alongside a senior colleague, he helped introduce clot-dissolving therapy for acute myocardial infarction. A year later he introduced colour Doppler echocardiography in India and subsequently established a national institute focused on echocardiography and cardiac research.

In 1986 Aggarwal founded the Heart Care Foundation of India and served as its president for the remainder of his life. He also launched public-health initiatives such as the Perfect Health Mela and Run for Your Heart, first organized in 1991; these events grew into large, recurring health campaigns and influenced broader health policy adoption. Aggarwal supported access to cardiac surgery through collaborative funds for patients unable to afford care.

He also developed practical public-health guidance and "Health Sutras"—short, memorable rules about diet, chronic disease prevention and early-warning symptoms—that he shared widely. During outbreaks of infectious diseases in India he organized conferences for clinicians and issued guidelines for the public.
