Career
Ghanekar’s stage journey began in the early 1950s. He first appeared in Marathi theatre productions, making his stage debut in 1952. Over the next two decades he established himself as a major presence in Marathi theatre, performing in well-known plays including Tujhe Aahe Tujpashi, Sundar Mi Honar, Madhumanjiri, Raygadala Jevha Jaag Yete, Ashroonchi Zhali Phule, Ithe Oshalala Mrutyu, Garambicha Bapu, Guntata Hruday He and Anandi Gopal. His portrayals in Raygadala Jevha Jaag Yete (1962), in which he played Sambhaji, and Ashroonchi Zhali Phule (1963), in which he played the role of Lalya, were among the performances that contributed to his reputation on stage.
Alongside theatre, Ghanekar worked in Marathi cinema from the 1950s onward. His earliest film credit dates to 1952, and his filmography includes Dharm Patni (1953), Maratha Tituka Melvava (1963), Paathlaag (1964), Madhuchandra (1967), Ghar Gangecha Kathi (1975) and Ha Khel Savalyancha (1976). The 1967 film Madhuchandra brought him significant recognition. He also appeared in two Hindi films, Daadi Maa (1966) and Abhilasha (1968). His final film appearance was in the Marathi film Chandra Hota Sakshila (1978).
Ghanekar remained a box-office draw for stage productions during his career. Contemporary accounts describe his stage shows as very popular and frequently sold out. He was among the highest-paid theatre artists of his time and commanded substantial fees for performances.

In 1983 he married Kanchan, the daughter of veteran actress Sulochana. He had a daughter, Rashmi Ghanekar, from his second marriage. Reports note that he smoked and drank.
Death and legacy
Kashinath Ghanekar died on 2 March 1986 at the age of 56. He passed away in a rural village in Amravati, Maharashtra; the reported cause of death was cardiac arrest.
