Early life and backgroundVivek Hallegere Murthy was born on July 10, 1977, in Huddersfield, England, and spent part of his upbringing connected to his family’s roots in Hallegere Village, Karnataka. His parents emigrated to the United States in 1980. Murthy completed high school at Miami Palmetto Senior High School and went on to study at Harvard and Yale, earning a BA in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard, an MD from Yale School of Medicine and an MBA in Health Care Management from Yale School of Management. In 2008 he helped start TrialNetworks, a technology platform designed to support collaboration among researchers and accelerate clinical research. That same period saw him co-found Doctors For America, a national nonprofit that brings physicians and medical students into dialogue with policymakers to shape evidence-informed health policy. In December 2014 Murthy was appointed the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, becoming the youngest person and the first Indian-American to hold the office.
