Duncan Norvelle Biography
Duncan Norvelle was a British stand-up comedian best known for his cheeky catchphrase and appearances on television variety shows throughout the 1980s and
Early life and backgroundDuncan A. Norvelle was born on 2 April 1958 in Hoton, Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. He grew up locally and left school at 16 to work in a menswear shop before deciding to pursue comedy. During his youth he developed an interest in performing and often mimicked people around him, a tendency that helped shape his later stage persona.
Career
Norvelle built his reputation as a club and variety performer, rising through the circuit that produced many British comics of his generation. He broke into television in the early 1980s and became widely recognised for his catchphrase “Chase me,” which he used while portraying a deliberately camp, family-friendly comic character on ITV variety programming. That recognition led to regular appearances on daytime and variety shows, including Wogan, Surprise Surprise, The Bob Monkhouse Show, Bullseye, Blankety Blank and The Keith Harris Show.
He hosted the pilot of a dating show for London Weekend Television in 1985 that was later developed into Blind Date, and in 1988 performed on the prestigious London Palladium stage. Norvelle continued to work on TV and live tours through the 1990s and 2000s. In 1991 he appeared on the comedy panel show Through the Keyhole.
Norvelle released recorded material from his work: in 2006 a DVD titled In The Club was issued, and he also released an album called Music From My Life. He toured in support of other comedians, joining the Ricky Tomlinson Laughter Show in 2008, and returned to pantomime in 2009 playing Buttons in Cinderella in Doncaster.
After appearing on Celebrity Come Dine with Me in 2011, Norvelle suffered a major health setback in 2012 when he had a stroke that left the left side of his body paralysed. He spent nine weeks in hospital and withdrew from scheduled engagements, including a summer season with Cannon and Ball. He spent roughly three years away from performing; in 2015 he returned to the stage at the Embassy Theatre in Skegness in a show that raised funds for the Stroke Association.
In later years he continued to make television appearances, including taking part in an 80s special episode of Pointless Celebrities in 2019. At various points he adjusted his stage catchphrase from “Chase me, go on, chase me” to a shorter “Push me.”
Public profile
Norvelle’s public image was that of a traditional British variety act, shaped by club and theatre work as well as television exposure. He was part of a cohort of entertainers who made their name in men’s clubs and variety venues before moving into mainstream television. Physically, records list him at about 5 feet 11 inches tall with brown eyes and salt-and-pepper hair.
Personal life
He was divorced from Tina Hall and had a son and two daughters: a son, Jack, with Jane Lindsay; and daughters Sophie and Yasmine with Tina Hall. Norvelle later formed a long-term partnership with digital creator Linda Trevallion; the two met through a mutual friend after Norvelle’s stroke and lived together for many years, though they were not married. At the time prior to his death he was living with Linda and his son in Walton in the Wolds, Leicestershire.
Health and death
In 2012 Norvelle experienced a debilitating stroke that required an extended hospital stay and a multi-year recovery away from the stage. He continued to perform after recovering enough to return to live shows.
On 12 December 2024, Duncan Norvelle died in Boston, Lincolnshire, at about 8:15 a.m. He was 66. His death followed a chest infection and sepsis; he had been admitted to hospital approximately two weeks earlier.
Latest updates
Norvelle’s career spanned live club work, television variety, recorded releases and charitable performances following his stroke. He remained known for his stage persona and catchphrase that had made him a familiar face on British television in the 1980s and beyond.
