Early life and background

Dunith Nethmika Wellalage was born on 9 January 2003 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He grew up in Colombo and developed an early interest in cricket while attending St. Sebastian's College, Moratuwa and later St. Joseph's College, Colombo. His father, Suranga Niroshan Wellalage, is a former cricketer and businessman, and his mother is Harshani Kanchana Wellalage. He has two younger siblings, including Pulina Senath Wellalage, a badminton player, and Chamath Chithira Wellalage, who plays cricket.

Career

Wellalage progressed through school cricket, representing teams such as St. Sebastian’s Under-13 and Under-15 sides and St. Joseph’s Under-15 and Under-19 teams. He made his first-class debut for Lankan Cricket Club on 9 May 2019, taking five wickets in the match. Later that year, on 14 December 2019, he made his List A debut for Lankan Cricket Club.

A left-handed batter and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Wellalage captained Sri Lanka’s Under-19 side at the 2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He finished the tournament as his team's top run-scorer and leading wicket-taker, claiming 17 wickets and compiling 264 runs, including a century in a playoff semifinal against South Africa. His Under-19 performances earned him selection in the ICC Most Valuable Team of the tournament.

Wellalage was part of Sri Lanka’s Emerging Team that toured England in April 2022 and made his T20 debut on 25 May 2022 against Surrey. He played for Sri Lanka A during the series against Australia A later in 2022.

At international level, Wellalage made his ODI debut on 14 June 2022 against Australia and his Test debut on 24 July 2022 against Pakistan. In the 2022 ODI series against Australia he finished as the leading wicket-taker for Sri Lanka with nine wickets. He took two wickets on his ODI debut and in his debut Test match contributed with the bat but did not take a wicket.

Wellalage has also played franchise cricket for the Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League, signing with the team for the 2022 edition. During the 2023 Asia Cup he recorded a milestone performance in a Super Four match against India, taking five wickets for 40 runs and scoring an unbeaten 42, which earned him his first ODI Man of the Match award.
