Early life and background

E. Ramdoss was born in 1957 in Villupuram, a town in Tamil Nadu. Raised in a Tamil-speaking family, he developed an early fascination with stories and movies. He pursued higher education at Islamiah College in Vaniyambadi before relocating to Chennai in 1979 to pursue a career in the Tamil film industry.

Career

Ramdoss began his film career as a screenwriter. His first credited work as a writer was for the Tamil film Enakkaga Kaathiru (1981). Over the following years he contributed writing to a number of Tamil productions, including projects in the mid-to-late 1990s such as Raja Muthirai (1995) and Dhinamum Ennai Gavani (1997), and he was involved with films through the end of that decade.

While building his writing portfolio, Ramdoss also trained under established filmmakers. He worked as an assistant director to Manivannan, which led to opportunities to direct feature films. His directorial debut in Tamil cinema came with Aayiram Pookkal Malarattum (1986), and he went on to direct titles including Vaazhga Jananayagam (1996) and Suyamvaram (1999).

Later in his career Ramdoss expanded into acting. He began taking on onscreen roles in the 2000s, with a small part as a ward boy in Vasool Raja MBBS (2004). Over the next two decades he appeared in a wide range of Tamil films in supporting and character roles. Films in which he acted include Cuckoo (2014), Oru Naal Koothu (2016), Visaranai (2016), Vikram Vedha (2017), Thappu Thanda (2017), Goli Soda 2 (2018), Boomerang (2019), Naadodigal 2 (2020), Agent Kannayiram (2022) and Varalaru Mukkiyam (2022).

Ramdoss was frequently cast in roles portraying police officers; among the films that featured him in such parts are Yuddham Sei (2011), Kakki Sattai (2015), Visaranai (2016), Dharma Durai (2016) and Vikram Vedha (2017). Across his work as writer, director and actor he remained active in Tamil cinema from the early 1980s into the 2020s.
