Edava Basheer was born on 2 December 1943 in a parish in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. He spent much of his childhood living at Sam Geethalaya near Kadapakkada Prathibha Junction in Kollam. His early education included study at a parish until the eighth standard, followed by formal schooling at Christuraj School, Pattathanam.

Music became a central part of Basheer’s life from a young age after he discovered old records and a record player his father had brought from abroad. He pursued classical training under Ratnakaran Bhagwatar and Vechoor Harihara Subramaniam and later earned the Ganabooshanam, an academic degree in music, from Swathi Thirunal Music Academy, Thiruvananthapuram in 1972.

Career

After completing his formal music education, Basheer began singing professionally and became closely associated with the ganamela tradition — live stage music shows popular in Kerala. He helped found the All Kerala Musicians and Technicians Association while still studying and later served as the State President of the All Kerala Musicians & Technicians Welfare Association.

Basheer organized and led choirs that attracted wide audiences, and he formed troupes such as Raga Bhavan and Blue Diamonds. He also established a music troupe named Sangeethalaya in Varkala; the inauguration was performed by his idol, the celebrated singer K.J. Yesudas.

In addition to live performance and choir work, Basheer recorded playback songs for Malayalam cinema. His debut as a playback singer came in 1978 with the song “Veena Vaayikkum” for the film Raghuvamshami, directed by Adoor Bhasi. He went on to sing other notable film numbers, including songs for the movie Mukkuvane Snehicha Bhootham that became popular with listeners.

Basheer was particularly well known for preferring stage performance over studio playback work because it allowed immediate interaction with audiences. He popularized devotional and folk-tinged pieces in his live sets, with songs in praise of goddesses and other frequently requested numbers forming a core part of his repertoire.

Basheer’s popularity was wide-ranging: he performed at temple festivals across Kerala and toured internationally, appearing for Malayali audiences in the United States, the United Kingdom, parts of Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia. At the height of his career he was known to play multiple venues a day, sometimes performing at as many as four events in a single day.

Death and legacy

On 28 May 2022, while performing at a Golden Jubilee celebration for Bhima’s Blue Diamond Orchestra in Alappuzha, Kerala, Basheer collapsed on stage during a song and was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was 78 years old. His funeral took place on 29 May 2022 at Kadappakada Juma Masjid.
