Eden Michael Hazard was born on 7 January 1991 in La Louviere, Belgium, and grew up in Braine-le-Comte. Football was central to his childhood: both of his parents were professional footballers and he began kicking a ball very early, joining his local club Royal Stade Brainois at age four. After eight years with his hometown side he moved to Tubize, and scouts from French club Lille first noticed him while he was still a youth player. He signed a youth contract with Lille in 2005 and penned his first professional deal with the club on 28 May 2007.

Career

Hazard made his club debut for Lille on 24 November 2007 against Nancy and broke into the first team over the following seasons. His performances at Lille earned him domestic awards including back-to-back Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year honours and two UNFP Ligue 1 Player of the Year awards during his time at the French club.

He made his international debut for Belgium on 18 November 2008 in a match against Luxembourg. Hazard scored his first international goal on 7 October 2011 versus Kazakhstan and captained Belgium for the first time on 7 June 2015 in a friendly against France. He led his country in the UEFA Euro 2016 finals and was part of Belgium’s squads for the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
