Early life and background

Eenam Gambhir was born on 24 July 1983 in New Delhi, where she also grew up. She completed undergraduate studies in Mathematics (Honours) at Hindu College, University of Delhi, and later earned a masters degree in Advanced International Security from the University of Geneva. Her parents are Jagdish Gambhir, who worked as an assistant director at the DDA, and Veena Gambhir. She has a brother, Gaurav Gambhir, and a sister, Megha Gambhir.

Career

Gambhir is an Indian Foreign Service officer from the 2005 batch. Over the course of her diplomatic career she has held a range of positions both at headquarters and on overseas postings. Early assignments included work during her probationary period in New Delhi on United Nations economic and social issues.

Her overseas and multilateral roles have included service as Second Secretary at the Embassy of India in Argentina and later as Counsellor at Indias Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. At the UN she has represented India on matters such as Security Council reform, counter-terrorism, cyber security and regional issues that come before the Security Council. She has also served as Senior Adviser on peace and security matters in the Office of the President of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly.

At the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Gambhir has served as Under Secretary and later as Joint Secretary. In January 2021 she was appointed Joint Secretary at the Ministry, and in 2023 she was Joint Secretary of the G20 process and co-chairperson of the G20 Development Working Group, a role that involved overseeing elements of Indias G20 engagement.
