Early life and background

Eknath Sambhaji Shinde was born on 9 February 1964 in Jawali Taluka, Satara District, Maharashtra. He grew up in the region and completed schooling in Thane, attending Thane Municipal Corporation School, Kisan Nagar and Rajendra Pal Mangla Hindi High School. He later pursued higher education through Vashvantrao Chavan Open University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Marathi and political science after resuming studies later in life.

Shinde comes from a family with roots in the Maratha community. His father is Sambhaji Navlu Shinde and his mother was Gangubai Sambhaji Shinde. He has a brother, Prakash Sambhaji Shinde, who served as a councillor at Thane Municipal Corporation. Shinde is married to Lata Eknath Shinde, and the couple had three children: two sons and a daughter. His son Dr Shrikant Shinde is a politician and medical doctor. Two of his children, Dipesh and Shubhada, died in 2000.

Career

Eknath Shinde’s public life began at the local level. He entered municipal politics in 1997 when he was elected a corporator to the Thane Municipal Corporation. He served as leader of the house in the corporation in the early 2000s and was subsequently appointed Thane district head of Shiv Sena, a party role that placed him at the centre of local organisational work.

He first won election to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 2004 from the Thane constituency and was re-elected in 2009, 2014 and 2019, serving four consecutive terms. Over the years he took on increasing responsibilities within both the party and state government. Following the 2014 election he served as Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly for a period and later held cabinet roles, including Public Works (Public Undertakings) and guardian minister for Thane district between 2014 and 2019.

In January 2019 he was given the additional charge of Public Health and Family Welfare, and later that year he served in the cabinet of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government under Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. His portfolios have included Urban Development, Public Works, and an acting spell as Minister of Home Affairs at the end of 2019. He was appointed chairman of the Maharashtra State Roads Development Corporation (MSRDC) during his tenure as Public Works Minister.

Shinde has been associated with a number of infrastructure and road projects overseen by MSRDC and the public works ministry. Projects completed or advanced under his charge include major expressway and bridge initiatives, road six-laning and improvements to highway safety measures.
