Elavenil Valarivan was born on 2 August 1999 in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Raised in a family with strong academic and service backgrounds, her father Valarivan Ruthrapathy is a scientist and an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and her mother Saroja Valarivan worked as a teacher. She has a younger brother, Ereivan, who serves as a Captain in the Indian Army.

Elavenil showed an interest in sports from an early age. Before focusing on shooting, she participated in athletics as a long-distance runner and sprinter. She began taking up shooting initially as a pastime after being introduced to the sport by a cousin, and transitioned to full-time, serious practice in July 2014.

Career

Elavenil competes in the ISSF 10-meter air rifle event. Training intensely through her school years, she balanced academics with demanding practice schedules—rising very early for morning sessions and training again after school—while completing her tenth-grade exams in 2015. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature.

Her junior career brought early international success. In 2018 she won gold at the ISSF Junior World Cup and at other junior World Cup stages, including Suhl, as well as gold in a mixed-team junior event. That same year she took a silver medal in the 10m air rifle junior event at the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Changwon.

Transitioning to senior competition, Elavenil continued to collect top honors. In 2019 she secured individual gold at the ISSF World Cup stage in Rio de Janeiro in the 10m air rifle event and also won the ISSF World Cup Final in Putian, China. She earned the senior individual gold in the 10m air rifle at the 2019 Asian Airgun Championships in Taoyuan, Taiwan. Additionally, she finished fourth at the ISSF Shooting World Cup finals in Munich and won a silver medal at the World University Games in 2019.

Coaching and technique have played notable roles in her development. Her personal coach is Neha Chavan, and at the national level she has worked with Deepali Deshpande and Deepak Dubey. Elavenil shoots right-handed and is right-eye dominant.
