Emma Slater Biography

Emma Louise Slater is a British-American dancer and choreographer best known for her long-running role on Dancing with the Stars. Born in Tamworth, England

Early life and background

Emma Louise Slater was born on December 25, 1988, in Tamworth, Staffordshire, England. Raised in the nearby town of Sutton Coldfield, she developed an early interest in dance after seeing a local Rumba show at age ten. That experience led her to train in both Latin and ballroom dance at several local schools, including Novelli Stage School in Birmingham and the Rawlett High School (now The Rawlett School) in Tamworth. By her mid-teens she had chosen to concentrate on Latin dance and began competing across the U.K. and internationally, representing England on three occasions and winning both the UK and British Latin Dance Championships.

Career

Slater committed to dance as a full-time pursuit at 18 and quickly joined several touring stage productions. In 2005 she became a principal dancer in the show Simply Ballroom and appeared in George Michael’s music video for "Round Here". In the following years she took on leading dance roles in productions such as Cheek to Cheek at the London Coliseum and Latin Fever at the Peacock Theatre, and she toured with Burn the Floor beginning in 2009. That tour brought her to stages worldwide, including a long run at the Longacre Theatre in New York and dates across Asia and Europe.

Her stage work led to a relationship with fellow dancer Sasha Farber, who she met while working on Burn the Floor. The pair later collaborated professionally, co-choreographing a routine for Usher at the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas in 2012.

Television fame followed through Dancing with the Stars. Slater joined the program in 2012 as a troupe dancer and choreographer for opening numbers, then progressed to a professional partner on the show in season 17. Over more than a decade on the series she was partnered with a wide range of celebrities: Bill Engvall (season 17), Billy Dee Williams (season 18), Michael Waltrip (season 19), Redfoo (season 20), Benjamin
