Eoin Morgan Biography

Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan is an Irish-born cricketer who captained England to major success and represented both Ireland and England at international level

Early life and background

Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan was born on 10 September 1986 in Dublin, Ireland. Raised in Dublin, he attended the Catholic University School and later enrolled at Dulwich College in London before leaving the course. Morgan holds both Irish and English nationality. From a young age he played multiple sports; in his teens he also played hurling twice a week, an experience that he has said contributed to developing some of the batting skills he would later use at the top level.

Career

Morgan began his international career with Ireland, making his One Day International debut for Ireland on 5 August 2006 against Scotland. He produced notable early performances for Ireland, including becoming the first Irish cricketer to score a first-class double century when he made 209 against the UAE in February 2007. He also emerged as a leading run-scorer at the Under-19 World Cup while representing Ireland.

Seeking greater opportunities in Test-playing cricket, Morgan switched allegiance to England. He made his Test debut for England on 27 May 2010 against Bangladesh in London and his Twenty20 debut for England on 5 June 2009 versus the Netherlands. Morgan featured in England’s World Cup squad in 2011, having already represented two countries at ICC World Cups by then.

A left-handed batsman and occasional right-arm medium bowler, Morgan developed a reputation for composure at the crease and for inventive strokeplay. He compiled multiple ODI centuries across his career, with notable innings including an unbeaten 124 against Ireland in 2013. By May 2019 he had become England’s most capped One Day International player, surpassing Paul Collingwood.

Morgan captained England during a transformative period for the limited-overs sides. Under his leadership, England won their first Cricket World Cup in 2019. His county and franchise career has included spells with Middlesex and appearances in the Indian Premier League and other T20 competitions, featuring for teams such as Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Sydney Thunder.

International retirement

After a long international career that included appearances across formats, Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket on 28 June 2022. His last recorded international appearances include a Test match for England in June 2012, an ODI for Ireland in June 2022, and a T20 for England in January 2022.

Public profile

His temperament on the field has often been described as calm, and he lists the pull and the reverse sweep among his favoured strokes. He has named Brian Lara and Jacques Kallis among his cricketing influences, and Lord’s as a favourite ground.

Personal life

Morgan is married to Tara Ridgway; the couple wed on 3 November 2018. He is the son of Jody and Olivia Morgan and has several siblings. He is a non-vegetarian and enjoys reading, fishing and playing golf. His physical profile is listed at approximately 1.73 m (5'8") in height and around 65 kg (143 lbs) in weight, with blue eyes and dark brown hair.
