Early life and background

Erin Alexandra Burns was born on 22 June 1988 in Coledale, New South Wales, and grew up in the Wollongong region. She attended Bulli High School and later studied at the University of Wollongong. Burns went on to complete a Master of Physiotherapy from the University of Sydney and is a registered exercise physiologist under Exercise Sports Science Australia.

Her sporting pathway began at a young age. She took part in a country championship for the New South Wales Under-17s when she was a teenager and progressed through state age-group teams. A significant family event in 2005, when her father died after a battle with cancer, has been an influence on her off-field endeavours.

Career

Burns established herself as a T20 and limited-overs specialist who contributes with both bat and ball. She is a right-handed batter and bowls right-arm offbreak. Her domestic career has taken her to multiple teams across Australia, New Zealand and England, and she has been a regular presence in franchise competitions.

Her early domestic stints included New South Wales age-group sides and debuting for Tasmania (Tasmanian Roar) in the first official Australian Women’s Twenty20 Cup in 2009. She made her Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) debut in October 2010, scoring a half-century on that occasion. In 2010 she was named Tasmania State Player of the Year and later featured in successful club and provincial campaigns, including Wellington Blaze’s New Zealand Twenty20 Cup victory in 2014–15 and a Sydney first-grade title with Bankstown Sports Women’s Cricket Club the same season.

Burns has been part of multiple Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) squads. She played in the inaugural Hobart Hurricanes side in 2015–16, moved to the Sydney Sixers ahead of the 2017–18 WBBL season and won a WBBL title with the Sixers that year. She became a mainstay at the Sixers, reaching the milestone of 50 appearances for the club and delivering match-winning performances, including a Player of the Match display in November 2020 where she combined wickets and several catches.

Her performances in domestic one-day cricket earned recognition as the 2021 WNCL Player of the Tournament, a season in which she scored consistently and also contributed with the ball.

International and franchise highlights

Burns made her international debut for Australia in September 2019, receiving her first ODI cap and making her T20I debut shortly afterwards on the West Indies tour. In December 2019 she produced a standout innings for Australia A, scoring a century against India A and taking the Player of the Match award.

Injuries have interrupted parts of her international availability. She underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in January 2020 that affected her match fitness and prevented her from featuring in Australia’s 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup campaign despite being named in the squad. She has also been named to representative squads such as the Governor-General’s XI and Australia A on several occasions.

Burns has appeared in overseas franchise competitions too. She played for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred’s inaugural season, scoring runs across the tournament, and later joined Manchester Originals for the following season. In 2023 she was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore for the inaugural Women’s Premier League and made her debut for the side that March.

Style and preferences

Known as an all-rounder, Burns combines aggressive lower-order batting with off-spin and is particularly valued in the T20 format. In interviews she has expressed a preference for the shorter formats of the game.

Public profile

Off the field, Burns has worked as a physiotherapist at clinics in North Sydney and Neutral Bay and has undertaken community-focused fundraising efforts, including a long-distance charity bike ride in memory of her father to raise awareness for cancer.

Personal life

Burns is married; she and her partner became parents when their son, Jack Mitchell Murphy Burns, was born on 20 January 2022. Her hometown is recorded as Wollongong, New South Wales.

Latest updates

In 2021 and 2022 Burns continued to feature in domestic and franchise cricket, signing a two-year contract extension with the Sydney Sixers before the 2022–23 WBBL season and being named in the WBBL Team of the Tournament following a strong season. She remained active in The Hundred and the Women’s Premier League during the 2022–23 period and produced notable innings for the Governor-General’s XI in January 2023, earning Player of the Match honours against Pakistan.

As of the latest reports in the licensed material, Burns balances elite cricket with her professional qualifications in physiotherapy and exercise physiology, and she continues to be a regular contributor in T20 and one-day competitions domestically and in franchise cricket abroad.
