Early life and background

Esha Singh was born on 1 January 2005 and grew up in Secunderabad, Hyderabad. Her father, Sachin Singh, previously competed in rally driving and runs a sports shop; her mother is Srilatha. Esha is an only child. She attended Reqelford International School in Hyderabad.

As a child she tried several sports including go-karting, badminton, tennis and skating. Her introduction to shooting came when she accompanied her father to the Gachibowli Athletic Stadium to visit a family friend and first saw a shooting range there. That visit sparked her interest and she began training in pistol shooting at a young age.

Her first pistol was an expensive purchase for the family and her parents supported her pursuit by travelling to training camps and later creating a small range at home. Her father reduced his rally activities and ultimately retired from rallying to travel with her for competitions and training.

Career

Esha competes primarily in 10m air pistol events and is listed in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) for that discipline. She has trained at the Gun For Glory Shooting Academy in Pune and has worked with coaches including Hiren Jaiswal and, as of 2022, Abdul Kayyum Shah.

After beginning training in Hyderabad, she travelled frequently to Pune to attend camps and work with experienced coaches. Within a year of focused training she won the Telangana state championship in 10m air pistol. Her rapid rise continued at national competitions: at the 62nd National Shooting Championship in Thiruvananthapuram she defeated established Indian shooters to claim senior-level success, and she became the youngest champion in the women’s senior 10m air pistol event at the national championships in Kerala.

Esha’s international medal record includes multiple podium finishes across junior and senior competitions. She won gold medals at the 2019 Asian Championships in 10m air pistol events in Doha and Taoyuan, and also earned a gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team at the same Asian Championships. In 2019 she took bronze in the mixed team event at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl.

On the global junior circuit and senior world stage she collected silver medals at the 2021 ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl and at the 2021 World Championships in Lima in both 10m and 50m pistol categories. In 2022 she won a silver at the ISSF World Cup in Cairo in the women’s 10m pistol event. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou she helped secure a gold in the women’s 25m air pistol team event and also took an individual silver in the women’s 25m pistol event.

Her achievements have been recognized with national honors: she received the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar in 2020 and the Arjuna Award in 2023.
