Early life and background

Fahad Zirar Ahmad was born on 2 February 1992 in Baheri, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family where community service and local politics were part of daily life; his father, Zirar Ahmad, was active in the Samajwadi Party in the Bareilly district and led social campaigns that influenced Fahad's early interest in activism. Fahad is the eldest of five children and has described himself as the first person in his family to graduate.

Fahad attended Zakir Hussain Model Higher Secondary School in Aligarh until the ninth standard. He later studied at Aligarh Muslim University and completed a B.Com degree. He pursued postgraduate study in social work at the Central University of Himachal Pradesh in Dharamsala and then enrolled at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai, where he completed an M.Phil. in social work. As of 2022, he was also pursuing a PhD.

Career

Fahad Ahmad built his profile through student organisation and public activism. While at TISS he was elected general secretary of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences Students' Union for 2017–2018. His campus activism included protests over the institute's withdrawal of financial aid for students eligible for the Government of India Post-Matric Scholarship; Fahad took part in a convocation protest and refused to accept his MPhil degree on stage as part of the demonstration.

Beyond campus, Fahad has been active in several public movements. He has participated in rallies opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC), took part in protests at August Kranti Maidan, and was involved in relief work following the 2013 Muzaffarnagar unrest. In March 2013 he co-founded a relief camp in Muzaffarnagar called SOCH beyond the imagination. He has also interned with the Amrit Foundation of India.

Fahad's activism extended to public speaking engagements: he gave a TEDx talk at Hinduja College in 2019 and has been invited to speak on televised and live platforms about contemporary political and education issues, including a News18 Urdu discussion and an event on India's National Education Policy in Mumbai in September 2022.

In August 2022 Fahad formally entered party politics by joining the Samajwadi Party. He went on to lead the party's youth wing as president of the Samajwadi Yuvjan Sabha. The licensed information records a later party affiliation listed as the Nationalist Congress Party in October 2024.
