Faris Shafi Biography

Pakistani rapper, musician and television actor Faris Shafi has built a reputation for socially conscious lyrics and collaborations across Pakistan’s music

Early life and background

Faris Shafi was born on 2 November 1987 in Lahore, Pakistan. He grew up in a family connected to Pakistan’s arts and media: his mother is television actress Saba Hameed and his grandfather was writer and activist Hameed Akhtar. Shafi completed a master’s degree in advertising from a university in Turkey.

Career

Shafi began releasing music in the early 2010s. His first single, “Awaam,” appeared in 2012 and featured Taimoor Salahuddin; the song’s video included journalist and filmmaker Fazeelat Aslam. That year he also made his television acting debut in the serial Manjali, a project that also included his mother in the cast. Over subsequent years he appeared in other television dramas including Kabhi Kabhi, Sun Yaara, Zid, and Meri Guriya.

As a recording artist, Shafi has released a number of songs and projects that address social and political themes. Among his popular tracks are Muskura, Jawab De, Nazar, Introduction, Molotov and Waasta, the latter of which featured rapped verses in both English and Urdu. In 2019 he released the album Metannoya and collaborated on the track “Prosaic” with Abdullah Siddiqui. His work often deals with socio-cultural problems in Pakistan, tackling topics such as inequality, poverty and related social ills.

Shafi has also worked with other producers and artists. He collaborated with Talal Qureshi on two productions created for the BBC Asian Network. His song “Clap” received a Lux Style Awards nomination in 2019; Shafi publicly asked for the song to be withdrawn from consideration amid a broader controversy that year.

Public profile

In interviews and public remarks he has criticized aspects of Pakistan’s political setup and has addressed cultural topics including gender discrimination. Musically, he cites influences such as Tupac and Snoop Dogg, and has acknowledged the rapper Bohemia as an inspiration for rapping in Hindi and Urdu. He has spoken critically about artists he sees as producing club music rather than what he defines as rap.

He performed at Lahore Music Meet in 2020 and took part in Coke Studio in 2022, joining the show’s season roster.
