Fatima Payman Biography

Fatima Payman is an Australian-Afghan politician who entered federal parliament as a young senator. Raised in Perth after arriving in Australia as a child,

Early life and background

Fatima Payman was born on 12 January 1995 in Perth, Australia, into a family with deep Afghan roots. Her paternal line includes political involvement in Afghanistan, and her maternal grandparents came from Uzbekistan before settling in Afghanistan. As a child she experienced displacement when her family fled to Pakistan to escape the Taliban; her father later arrived in Australia by boat and spent time in immigration detention before working in a range of jobs to support the family.

When Payman was eight she and her mother and siblings joined her father in Perth, where they made their home. She completed her schooling in Perth and graduated as head girl of her high school. She went on to study at the University of Western Australia and holds a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and sociology as well as a Graduate Diploma of Pharmaceutical Science. She is bilingual, speaking English and Dari, and follows Islam, choosing to wear a hijab in public.

Career

Payman’s early paid work included a role as a pharmacy assistant at a TerryWhite Chemmart outlet from February 2018 to February 2020. Her father’s experiences in the workforce informed her interest in labour rights and workplace fairness. She joined the Labor Party in 2014 and became active in union organising, joining the United Workers Union in 2018. Within youth politics she rose to become president of Young Labor in Western Australia.

She worked as an electorate officer for Senator Pierre Yang from 30 May 2019 until 23 December 2020. Building on her union and party work, she moved into federal politics and, at age 27, became the youngest senator in the 2022 Australian parliament.

Public profile

Payman has been visible on a number of issues and occasions. In November 2023 she signalled support for Gaza by wearing a pin featuring the Aboriginal and Palestinian flags. In May 2025 she publicly raised allegations of racism and lodged a formal complaint after an incident at an official event in which she said an older male colleague made sexually suggestive and culturally insensitive remarks.

Her background and personal story—migration as a child, her family’s working-class experience in Australia, and her rapid ascent through youth politics and union organising—have been central to her public image as a young voice in federal politics.

Personal life

Payman is married to Jacob Stokes; the marriage took place in February 2024. Her parents are Abdul Wakil Payman and Shogufa. She has three siblings: two brothers and a sister. Of mixed Tajik and Uzbek heritage on her father’s and mother’s sides respectively, she identifies as Australian and Afghan.

Outside of politics she enjoys creative and domestic pursuits: painting (including paint-by-numbers), henna art, cooking for family gatherings and kayaking. She is known to enjoy reading cookbooks and has a fondness for dark chocolate, maroon as a favourite colour, and a particular food habit of dipping McDonald’s French fries into ice cream. She drives a Toyota Yaris.

Latest updates

In May 2025 Payman was in the news after filing a formal complaint alleging that a senior male colleague made racist and sexually suggestive comments toward her at an official event. The matter attracted public attention and media coverage.

She continues to be active in public life and federal politics, representing the next generation of politicians who came to prominence after involvement in youth branches of major parties and union organising.
