Early life and background

Fawad Ahmed Hussain Chaudhry was born on 7 April 1970 in Dina, a town in the Jhelum district of Punjab, Pakistan. He belongs to a Jat Muslim family from the Vains/Bains clan. His father, Nassim Hussain Chaudhry, was involved in politics, and several of his relatives have held public positions, including uncles who have served in provincial and judicial roles. Chaudhry attended F.G. Public School in Mangla Cantt and later studied at Government College University Lahore, where he completed legal studies in the mid-1990s.

Career

Chaudhry has combined work as a lawyer, political analyst and journalist with an active political career. After college he set up a law firm called First Law Company in 1998. He later worked in broadcast media as an anchor and analyst, hosting a current affairs program on Neo News.

His formal entry into electoral politics began in 2002 when he contested a provincial assembly seat as an independent candidate. Over the following years he was affiliated with multiple parties: he served as media coordinator for the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) from 2008 to 2012, joined the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in March 2012 and later became a member of Pakistan Muslim League‑Q (PML‑Q) for a period. In June 2016 he joined Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI).

Chaudhry has contested several elections at both provincial and national levels. He stood for provincial and national constituencies in 2002, 2013 and 2016 by‑elections with varying results. In the 2018 general election he won the NA‑67 (Jhelum‑II) National Assembly seat as a PTI candidate with 93,102 votes. He was also returned to the Punjab Assembly from PP‑27 (Jhelum‑III) in the same election.

Government roles

Following the 2018 general election, Chaudhry was appointed to federal cabinet positions in Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government. He was named Minister for Information and Broadcasting in August 2018 and took office on 20 August. In April 2019 he was moved to serve as Federal Minister for Science and Technology and later returned to the information ministry in April 2021.

While serving in science and technology portfolios, Chaudhry supported Pakistan’s space and satellite efforts. He was involved in the launch of the Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS‑1), a programme aimed at enhancing capabilities in areas such as agriculture, disaster management and urban planning. In May 2019, during his tenure at Science and Technology, he also launched an official moon‑sighting website and proposed a five‑year Hijri calendar intended to address disputes around lunar sighting for religious festivals.
