Early life and background

Fazel Atrachali was born on 29 March 1992 in Mohammadabad, Anjirab Rural in the Central District of Gorgan, Golestan province, Iran. Raised in Gorgan, he began athletic activities as a child, first wrestling with friends and then trying out as a football goalkeeper and defender when his wrestling coach left the village. He took to kabaddi at about age eleven and progressed through Iran’s junior ranks into the senior national team.

Career

Atrachali established himself as one of Iran’s most successful kabaddi defenders, operating primarily from the left corner. He became known for his physical strength and an aggressive style that features a signature quick dash — running at a raider and using his momentum to throw the opponent out of play. Weight training, swimming, rope work, stair climbs and football all form part of his fitness regimen; he manages his playing weight in the 75–90 kg band to meet international and Pro Kabaddi League standards.

On the international stage Atrachali represented Iran at multiple Asian Games and continental tournaments. He played at the 2010 Asian Games and later led Iran in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 Asian Games. He was part of Iran’s squads that won silver medals in 2010 and 2014, won gold at the 2018 Asian Games, and earned a silver again at the 2023 edition. He captained Iran at the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, finishing second to India, and has also competed in events such as the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and beach kabaddi competitions.

He has captained U Mumba, Puneri Paltan and Gujarat Giants at different times in the PKL.

His PKL career has been notable for both on-field achievement and high-profile auction signings. He was the first player in the league to be bought for Rs 1 crore and has been acquired three times for more than Rs 1 crore. By season 9 he held the record for most tackle points in the PKL, and he has been recognized twice as the league’s best defender (Season 4/2017 and Season 7/2019). He also captained the Golestan club to the Iran Champions League title in 2018.
