Fouaad Mirza Biography

Fouaad Mirza is an Indian eventing rider from Bangalore who has represented India at the Asian Games and the Olympics. A seventh-generation horseman, Mirza

Early life and background

Fouaad Mirza was born on 6 March 1992 in Bangalore, India, into a family long associated with horses. His father, Dr. Hasneyn Mirza, is an equestrian veterinarian and his brother, Aly Asker Mirza, is also a professionally trained equestrian. Mirza’s family traces its equestrian roots back generations, and he first sat on a horse as an infant. He grew up around animals and began riding regularly from about age five, developing the skills and competitive interest that would guide his sporting life.

Career

Mirza made his international debut at the 2014 Asian Games in Jakarta, competing in both individual and team eventing. He rose to wider prominence at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, where he won two medals: a silver in the individual eventing competition and a silver with the Indian team alongside teammates Rakesh Kumar, Ashish Malik, and Jitender Singh. His mount for the Asian Games was Seigneur Medicott, a horse he has frequently ridden in major competitions.

In 2018 Mirza recorded his first international gold at a CIC2 event in the Netherlands and also took a silver at a CCI1 competition in Germany the same year. He added another international gold in 2019 by winning a CCI3*-S event in Strzegom, Poland. Mirza qualified an Olympic quota in 2020 by topping the rankings in the South East Asia–Oceania group, and he trained for the Olympics under German equestrian Sandra Auffarth in Bergedorf, Germany.

At the Tokyo Olympics (officially the 2020 Games held in 2021), Mirza completed the cross-country phase on 2 August 2021, riding Seigneur Medicott and finishing that round in 23rd position before moving on to compete with other riders for final placings.

Horses and training

Mirza’s primary competition horse has been Seigneur Medicott. That horse suffered a significant injury in 2019 that sidelined him for over eight months, but recovery and the pandemic pause allowed time for rehabilitation, and Medicott returned to competition fitness before Tokyo. Mirza has also ridden horses including Fernhill Facetime, Touchingwood, and Dajara 4. He spends extensive time caring for and training his horses, describing daily routines that include feeding, physiotherapy, recovery work, and long hours in the stable.

Honours and records

Mirza is a recipient of the Arjuna Award, honored in 2019 for his achievements in equestrian sport. He is noted as one of the few Indian riders to qualify for the Olympics and as the first Indian equestrian in decades to win an individual medal at the Asian Games.

Public profile

Mirza holds degrees in psychology and business earned in England. He is unmarried and is known to spend long hours at his 1.5-acre farm in Bangalore, where he keeps a string of horses—reported to be around a dozen—whom he trains and cares for closely. His personal interests include reading and time spent with his horses.

Latest updates

Following recovery of Seigneur Medicott from injury and Olympic qualification in 2020, Mirza competed at the Tokyo Olympics and continues to be active in international eventing competitions. His coaching and preparation included work with Sandra Auffarth in Germany in advance of Olympic competition.
