G. Marimuthu was an Indian film director and character actor from Tamil Nadu who worked across Tamil cinema, television and a few Hindi and Malayalam films

Early life and background
G. Marimuthu was born on 12 July 1967 in Varusanadu in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. Raised in a farming family in the region, he left his hometown in 1990 and moved to Chennai with little money to pursue a career in cinema. In the city he survived by taking on a range of odd jobs, including working in hotels, while he worked to break into the film industry.

Career
Marimuthu began his film career behind the scenes, working as an assistant director to a number of established filmmakers. Early credits include assisting Rajkiran on Aranmanai Kili (1993) and Ellame En Rasathan (1995), and later working with directors such as Mani Ratnam, Vasanth, Rajiv Menon and S. J. Suryah. His assistant-director work encompassed titles like Bombay (1995), Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), Nerrukku Ner (1997), Poovellam Kettuppar (1999), Rhythm (2000), Panchalankurichi (1996), New (2001), Khushi (2003) and Anbe Aaruyire (2005). He also co-directed Silambarasan’s Manmadhan (2004).

Marimuthu moved into writing and direction with his debut as a director in Kannum Kannum (2008), for which he wrote the story, screenplay and dialogues. Although the film did not fare well commercially, it received critical attention. He returned as director in 2014 with Pulivaal. Alongside his directorial work, he increasingly took on supporting acting roles from the 2010s onward.

As an actor he appeared in a wide range of Tamil films, often cast in police or authority figures after his noted turn as the corrupt inspector Isakki Muthu in Yuddham Sei (2011). Subsequent films that featured him in similar or character roles include Aarohanam (2012), Nimirndhu Nil (2014), Komban (2015), Marudhu (2016), Kodi (2016), Kaththi Sandal (2016), Bairavaa (2017), Vada Chennai (2018), Kadaikutty Singam (2018), Pariyerum Perumal (2018) and Sivaranjiniyum Innum Sila Pengalum (2021). He appeared in the Malayalam action film Shylock (2020) and had a role in the Hindi film Atrangi Re (2021).

Marimuthu also worked in web series and television. He gained wider popular recognition for his portrayal of Aadhimuthu Gunasekaran in the Sun TV serial Ethirneechal (2022), a performance that brought him strong audience attention and an award in the Favourite Villain category. His most recent film appearance released before his death was Red Sandal Wood (2023), and he was credited in the post-production slate for Indian 2 and Thookudurai. At the time of his passing he was also actively shooting for the films Atharva and Oththa Votu Muthaiya.

Death
On 8 September 2023, Marimuthu died in Chennai. Reports state he suffered a cardiac arrest while dubbing for the television serial Ethirneechal and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
