Early life and background
Gyanendra Pratap Singh was born on 8 November 1967 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his schooling in Lucknow and went on to earn a BSc and an MSc from institutions in Lucknow. Singh joined the Indian Police Service after passing the civil services examination and trained at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.

Career
Singh is an IPS officer of the 1991 batch allocated to the Assam‑Meghalaya cadre. He began field training in Assam in 1992 at a time when militancy in the northeast was at its peak. Early postings included roles as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Sonitpur, Sub‑Divisional Police Officer in Rangia, and Additional Superintendent of Police in Nalbari, where he worked on counter‑insurgency efforts.

Over the years Singh has held progressively senior positions across Assam and at national agencies. He served as Superintendent of Police in Guwahati and Barpeta, and was posted as Inspector General of Police in Guwahati and later for the Bodoland Territorial Region. Singh spent significant time with the National Investigation Agency from 2013 to 2019 as an Inspector General.
