Early life and backgroundGaggan Anand was born on 21 February 1979 in Kolkata, India, into a Punjabi family. Raised in a household where food and conversation at the dinner table played a central role, he developed an early interest in cooking. As a child he experimented in the kitchen and later trained at the Indian Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology in Kovalam (IHMCT), receiving a diploma that set the course for his culinary career.
After his formal training he began working with the Taj Group and tried a number of small-scale ventures in Kolkata, including a catering business and a home-delivery service. Those early years included modest pay and hands-on lessons in making satisfying meals on a tight budget, experience that he has described as formative.
Career
Anand moved to Bangkok in 2007, seeking to participate in and shape a growing fine-dining scene in Asia. Influenced by progressive European chefs, he pursued advanced study and staged with Ferran Adrià’s research team, and in 2009 spent time at the Alícia Foundation in Spain. Encouraged by supporters in Bangkok, he opened his own restaurant, Gaggan, in December 2010.
Gaggan rapidly earned international recognition. The restaurant became the only Indian restaurant to place in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and repeatedly ranked on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants lists. On the global ranking it moved through the top 20 and into the top 10 in subsequent years, and it was named the best restaurant in Thailand in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Anand also opened other projects over time, including restaurants called Meatlicious and Sühring.
In July 2019 Anand resigned from Gaggan following a dispute with business partners. A few months later, on November 1, 2019, he launched a new Bangkok restaurant called Gaggan Anand. In 2020 he announced plans to close that project and explore a smaller, weekend-only 10-seat concept in Japan. His restaurant Gaggan Anand debuted at No. 5 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2021.
Public profile
Anand has described himself as a rebel in cuisine, seeking to broaden perceptions of Indian food beyond traditional staples. He has appeared on international food television, including Netflix’s Chef’s Table (season 2, episode 6) and Somebody Feed Phil (season 1, episode 1). He shares images of his cooking and personal moments on Instagram, where he posts about his daughter and his teams in the kitchen.
Personal life
Gaggan Anand’s hometown is Kolkata. He has a daughter named Tara. He has been married and divorced more than once; his second wife is listed as Tripradap Pui and he later split from her. Reports note that he is dating Mint Pattarasaya. He has described difficult periods in his personal life and has spoken publicly about leaving an earlier marriage. During the COVID-19 lockdown he experienced depression and turned to exercise and gym work to help his wellbeing.
Latest updates
After stepping away from his original restaurant in 2019, Anand opened Gaggan Anand in Bangkok and continued to receive recognition on Asia’s Best lists. In 2020 he signaled plans for a different, very small dining project in Japan. He continues to be active on social media and to open and operate restaurant concepts, maintaining a high public profile within contemporary Indian and global fine dining.
