Early life and background

Ganesh Acharya was born on 14 June 1971 in Cuttack, Orissa. His father, Krishna Gopi, worked as a dancer and choreographer but passed away when Ganesh was about ten years old. The loss affected his formal schooling; he left school and began learning dance from his sister, Kamla, who is also a dancer. By the age of 17 he was working as an assistant choreographer to Kamal Master, a role he continued in until Kamal Master's death.

Career

Acharya launched his career in film choreography in the early 1990s, with his debut credited on the 1992 film Anaam. Over the ensuing decades he established himself as a prominent choreographer in Indian cinema, earning national recognition for his work. In 2013 he received the National Film Award for Best Choreography for the song "Maston Ka Jhund" from the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Alongside choreography, Acharya has worked as a film director and actor. His directorial debut was Swami in 2007. As an actor he is credited with a role in the 2012 film Rowthiram. He has also made appearances outside Indian cinema, including a special appearance in the 2016 Chinese film Operation Mekong.

Acharya also served in a leadership role with the Indian Film and Television Choreographers Association (IFTCA) as General Secretary, a position mentioned in relation to one of the complaints.
