Gauahar Khan was born on 23 August 1983 in Mumbai and spent parts of her childhood in Pune after the family relocated. She attended Bai RFD Panday Girls’ High School in Mumbai and Mount Carmel Convent School in Pune before enrolling at Ness Wadia College of Commerce, Pune. She left college during her first year and subsequently trained at Anupam Kher’s acting school, moving into theatre and commercial modelling work.

Khan started modelling as a teenager and competed in the Femina Miss India pageant at 18, finishing fourth and winning the Miss Talented sub-contest.
