Gaurav Bhatia was born on 16 February 1977 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family with a legal and political background: his father, Virendra Bhatia, served as an Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh and was a member of the Rajya Sabha. His mother is Saroj Bhatia, and he has one sister.

Bhatia was educated at La Martinière College in Lucknow and went on to pursue higher studies abroad at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. He also holds a law degree from Lucknow University.
