Early life and backgroundGaurav Gogoi was born on 4 September 1982 in Delhi. He grew up in a political family: his father, Tarun Gogoi, served as Chief Minister of Assam, and a number of family members have been active in the state’s politics. Gaurav attended St. Columba’s School in Delhi, earned a B.Tech in Electronics Engineering from Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering (under Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University), and later completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration from New York University’s Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.
Before entering politics he spent time in the corporate and social sectors. After his engineering degree he joined Airtel’s marketing team, and between 2005 and 2007 he worked with the Delhi-based non-profit Pravah. During a spell in New York he worked as a policy aide at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where he met his future wife, Elizabeth Colebourn.
Career
Gaurav Gogoi formally joined the Indian National Congress in 2013. The following year he contested and won the Kaliabor Lok Sabha seat in Assam, a constituency long associated with his family. He served on parliamentary panels including the Standing Committee on Defence and the Standing Committee on Railways, and took part in committees addressing protocol and conduct matters in the Lok Sabha.
He was re-elected from Kaliabor in 2019. In 2020 he was appointed deputy leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha. As deputy leader he led a No-Confidence Motion in the Lok Sabha on 26 July 2023, which was brought on the issue of ethnic violence in Manipur. In August 2023 he was appointed chairman of the party’s screening committee for the Rajasthan assembly elections, a panel that included senior Congress leaders.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections he won the Jorhat seat in Assam by a margin of 1,44,393 votes, defeating a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Outside of parliamentary work, Gaurav has founded and led civil society initiatives. In 2011 he started Farm2Food to manage a mid-day meal programme and expose children to organic farming; the organisation has received recognition for its work. He also founded the Youth Forum on Foreign Policy to foster dialogue between practitioners, scholars and young people on external affairs.
