Early life and background

Gaurav Gupta was born on 17 January 1979 in New Delhi. Raised in a family involved in the iron and steel business, he showed an early affinity for drawing, sculpting and dance. Although he struggled with some subjects at school initially, his performance improved and he finished his higher secondary studies with strong marks.

Gupta attended Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan, New Delhi. He went on to study fashion design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi from 1997 to 2000, and later completed a bachelor’s degree in women’s wear at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London between 2001 and 2003.

During his teenage years Gupta faced bullying because of his sexuality and came out to his brothers early on. He later shared his sexual orientation with his parents while studying in London. His close personal circle includes his longtime partner Vijendra Bhardwaj, and his life partner Navkirat Sodhi; Gupta describes Sodhi as a soulmate and a life partner in a platonic sense.

Career

After finishing his studies, Gupta gained experience working with internationally recognised designers including Hussein Chalayan and Stella McCartney. He launched his own label in 2004 with his brother Saurabh Gupta, then took a brief spell away from the brand as an art director in Istanbul before returning to India and formally relaunching the label in 2006.

From the outset his work attracted attention for its sculptural approach. His India Fashion Week presentation in 2006 was called highly innovative by the media, and he is credited with popularising the sari-gown, a pre-draped cocktail sari that has since become familiar across contemporary Indian fashion.

In 2009 Gupta opened his first store in New Delhi. His flagship locations now include prominent retail addresses such as DLF Emporio and Mehrauli in New Delhi, Kala Ghoda in Mumbai, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad, and Galleria 1910 in Kolkata.

Key collections and innovations

Gupta’s 2013 collection Lightfall marked a turning point: its theatrical looks and provocative first look created strong discussion and commercial interest. In 2017 he collaborated with Vogue and IBM’s Watson to produce an AI-driven sari-gown that integrated lighting which changed in response to wearer interactions.

He expanded into menswear with Gaurav Gupta Man, which received broad exposure in 2018 through a collaborative opening show with GQ India that featured several high-profile personalities. In 2019 he launched a jewellery line, Gaurav Gupta Occasions Fine Jewellery, noted for kinetic and inventive pieces.

His couture shows often blend sculpture, immersive staging and poetic elements. Notable installations include a Tunnel of Infinity for Santati, an exhibition marking 150 years since Mahatma Gandhi, which debuted at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai.

Gupta’s sculptural creations have been worn by many international and Indian celebrities across red carpets, magazine shoots and campaigns. In 2022 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore one of his sculpted looks at the Cannes Film Festival that was later picked as an iconic Cannes look by international press. He has dressed personalities such as Lizzo, Megan Thee Stallion, Priyanka Chopra, Jennifer Hudson, Fan Bing Bing and others.

In January 2023 Gupta presented his debut Paris couture show, Shunya, hosted by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. That presentation made him the third Indian designer to show at Paris Haute Couture Week. He returned to Paris in July 2023 to present his Autumn/Winter 2024 collection Hiranyagarbha at Palais de Tokyo, where several international celebrities appeared in his custom gowns.
