Early life and background

Gaurish Akki was born and raised in the village of Mudhol in Yelburga Taluk, District Koppal, Karnataka. He completed his schooling at Parimala High School in Bidar and went on to earn an M.A. in English Literature from GI Bagewadi College, Nipani, under Karnataka University (1995–1997). He is an Indian national and lists his hometown as Mudhol in Yelburga Taluk.

Career

Akki began his professional life in education, working as a lecturer at Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College and later at S Nijalingappa College in Bengaluru. After about a year in teaching he transitioned into media, beginning a long career in television news and entertainment.

His journalism career commenced in 2000 with ETV Kannada News in Hyderabad, where he worked in roles such as voice-over artist, copy editor, bulletin producer and program producer. In March 2005 he joined TV9 (Kannada) in Bangalore as one of the channel’s founding team members. At TV9 he anchored programs that covered political, social and cultural topics and established a presence in the entertainment space by producing and hosting interview series.

Akki’s interview shows, notably Sakhathmaathu and Premapallavi, became widely recognised. He also produced a popular series titled Flashback. After nearly five years at TV9, he moved to Suvarna News 24/7 in 2010 where he led the cinema team and produced the programme Cinema Hungama. While at Suvarna he produced and directed a number of shows, including the series Out of Focus.

Between May 2016 and June 2017 he served as chief anchor at Suddi TV. In October 2017 he founded Gaurish Akki Studio in Bengaluru, a production house focused on advertising, documentary films and YouTube content.

Alongside his broadcasting work, Akki has pursued film projects as an actor and filmmaker. He appeared in supporting roles in the 2013 Kannada films Charminar and Lucia. He played the lead in Sipayee (2016), written and directed by Rajath Mayee, and has credits in Cinema My Darling (2016) and Navodaya Dayzz (2018). He was the lead actor in the novel-based Kengulabi (2018), and he appeared in Fantasy (2022) and the 2023 film Anavarana. His professional credits also include directing Cinema My Darling (2016).

Gaurish Akki is recognised for his presence on Kannada television as a presenter and interviewer, and for moving between journalism and the entertainment industry. Over the years he has been honoured for his work in broadcasting, receiving a State Media Academy Award for Best News Presenter (2007), a Best Interviewer award from Cable Varthe magazine (2008), and a Vocational Excellence award from Rotary (2009). He is also the founder of Alma Media School in Bengaluru and operates a production studio that creates ads, documentaries and online video content.
