Gautam Kitchlu was born on 16 August 1980 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He grew up in Mumbai and attended Cathedral & John Connon School. He went on to study economics at Tufts University, earning a BA, and later pursued textile development and marketing studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology. His education also includes time at INSEAD.

Kitchlu's early professional experience includes a summer analyst role at Merrill Lynch in 2001. He served as a director at Tracon Export Services Pvt.
