Early life and background

Gautham Ram Karthik was born on 12 September 1989 in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, and grew up in a Tamil-speaking family with deep ties to the film industry. He attended Hebron School in Ooty for his schooling and later studied at Christ University in Bengaluru, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts with studies in journalism, psychology and English. Raised in a family of actors, his father is Karthik Muthuraman and his mother is Ragini; his stepmother Rathi is also an actress. He has siblings including Ghayn Karthik and a stepbrother, Thiran Karthik.

While at college Gautham was active in music and served as the lead guitarist and backing vocalist for a band he and friends formed called Dead End Street.

Career

Gautham’s entry into cinema came through his association with filmmaker Mani Ratnam. He initially worked as an assistant director and, while still a student, was offered a lead acting opportunity by Mani Ratnam. After a period of meetings and screen tests, he was confirmed as the hero of the film and made his debut in 2013.

His first on-screen role was the lead in the Tamil film Kadal (2013), where he portrayed the character Thomas. The performance earned him recognition as a debutant: in 2014 he received multiple newcomer awards, including honors at the Filmfare Awards South and the South Indian International Movie Awards, along with a special award recognizing his debut.

Following his debut, Gautham continued to work in Tamil cinema across a range of films and genres. He appeared in Yennamo Yedho (2014) and Vai Raja Vai (2015). In 2018 he was seen in Iruttu Araiyil Murattu Kuththu and also featured alongside his father in Mr Chandramouli, playing the role of Raaghav; the experience of working with his father on that project was something he described as revealing and valuable. Later credits include Anandham Vilayadum Veedu (2021) and the 2022 film Yutha Satham, in which he played the role of Nagulan. He also joined the cast of Devrattam in 2019, where he met co-star Manjima Mohan.
