Gautham Vasudev Menon was born on 25 February 1973 in Ottapalam, Palakkad district, Kerala. He grew up in Anna Nagar, Chennai, and completed his schooling at Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School. He graduated in mechanical engineering from Mookambigai College of Engineering in 1993. Menon comes from a mixed Malayali–Tamil family; his father was Vasudev Menon and his mother, Uma Prabhakrishnan, worked as a teacher. He has two sisters, Anupama Menon and costume designer Uthara Menon.

Menon’s interest in filmmaking developed during his college years. He began writing scripts while studying and pursued practical exposure to film production, including shooting commercials and apprenticing under filmmaker Rajiv Menon.
