Early life and background

Gauthami Nair was born on 13 November 1991 in Alappuzha, Kerala. She grew up in that coastal town and completed her schooling at the Indian Community School in Kerala. She went on to study psychology at the University of Kerala, earning a BA and later an MS in Psychology from Government Women’s College, Trivandrum, affiliated with the same university. During her school and college years she was active in sports and served as sports captain at school; she also competed in and won several table tennis events in college.

Career

Nair entered the Malayalam film industry as an actor. Her screen debut came in 2012 with the film Second Show, in which she appeared as Geethanjali Janardhanan. She went on to act in a number of Malayalam films, including Diamond Necklace (for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Malayalam in 2013), Koothara (2014), Campus Diary (2016) and the film titled 2018, released in 2023.

Alongside her acting work, Nair has pursued academic and research roles in psychology and neuroscience. In December 2015 she began an internship with the psychology department at the Government Mental Health Center in Oolanpara, Kerala, and worked there for about a year. In 2017 she completed a two-month psychiatry internship at Government Medical College, Alappuzha. She later served as a research assistant at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. In March 2020 she joined Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology in Kerala as a junior researcher and was subsequently promoted to junior research fellow.

In 2023 Nair expanded her creative work into directing, credited as the director of the Malayalam film Vrittham.
