Gavie Chahal was born Navdeepak Singh Chahal on 11 November 1978 in the village of Ali Sher Khurd, Tehsil and District Mansa in Punjab, India. He grew up in Mansa and later moved with his family to Patiala, where he completed his schooling after studying through the seventh grade in his native village. He studied mechanical engineering at Government Polytechnic College, Batala, and graduated between 1994 and 1997.

During his college years Chahal was active in sports and cultural activities. He played kabbadi at the national level and represented basketball at the state level. He also led a regional bhangra team as captain of the North Zone Cultural Centre group. After finishing his education he served in the Punjab Police for a period of time.

Career

Chahal began his career in front of the camera as a model and in Punjabi music videos. He won the Mr. Punjab title in 2000, which helped launch his work in print and commercial advertising for brands including Volkswagen, Tata Motors, Gili Diamonds, Prestige, Radio Mirchi and IDBI Bank, and in television commercials for companies such as Hyundai Santro and Axis Bank.

His film debut in Punjabi cinema came in the mid-2000s, appearing in Yaaran Naal Baharan (2005) and later in titles like Mehndi Wale Hath (2006), Majajan (2008), Pinky Moge Wali (2012) and Saada Jawai NRI (2013). Over the years he has appeared in more than 60 Punjabi music videos, including recent tracks in which he has performed or been credited, and he has taken on roles in Hindi films. Notably, he portrayed Captain Abrar, an intelligence officer, in the Ek Tha Tiger series and returned to the franchise in follow-up entries including Tiger Zinda Hai (2017) and Tiger 3 (2023).
