Early life and backgroundGayatri Gopichand Pullela was born on 4 March 2003 in Hyderabad, Telangana. She grew up in a family steeped in badminton: her father, Pullela Gopichand, is a former international player and has served as chief national coach of India, and her mother, P. V. V. Lakshmi, also played badminton at a high level. Gayatri attended Glendale Academy in Hyderabad and began playing badminton at age seven, initially for enjoyment before deciding to pursue the sport seriously.
By her mid-teens she had risen through the junior ranks; by age 15 she was ranked No. 1 in India in the under-17 category. Those early achievements set the foundation for an international career in both women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
Career
Gayatri competes primarily on the international circuit in doubles events and is right-handed. She has been coached by her father, Pullela Gopichand, and by Anil Kumar. Over the course of her career she has partnered notably with Treesa Jolly in women’s doubles and with K. Sai Pratheek in mixed doubles.
Her results include victories at junior and senior domestic and international tournaments. Highlights listed in her competitive record include gold medals at the 2018 Kerala State Junior Ranking Championship and at the 2021 Infosys International Challenge. With Treesa Jolly she won the women’s doubles title at the 2021 India International Challenge and the 2022 Odisha Open (a BWF Super 100 event).
Gayatri has also finished runner-up in a number of events. Notable silver medals came at the 2019 Nepal International in women’s singles and at the 2019 South Asian Games in Pokhara. In doubles she earned silver at the 2021 Polish International and the 2021 Welsh International with Treesa Jolly, and she was a silver medallist in mixed doubles at the 2021 India International Challenge with K. Sai Pratheek. In 2022 she and Treesa Jolly were finalists at the Syed Modi India International (Super 300).
Her tournament experience spans several major events. Public profile
Gayatri’s public profile is shaped both by her on-court results and her family background. She has spoken about growing up around the sport, describing a progression from playing for fun to committing to a professional path, and has commented on the coaching dynamic with her father—strict during training but supportive off the court.
Off the court she enjoys films in Hindi and English, listening to music, singing, and dancing. Her favourite badminton players include Chen Long, Tai Tzu Ying, and Kento Momota.
Her family includes a younger brother, Sai Vishnu Pullela, who is also involved in badminton. Gayatri is unmarried.
Controversy
There have been public accusations of favouritism directed at Gayatri and her father in relation to selection decisions. Those complaints emerged around 2017 and concerned partner selections and tournament picks; they were reported in the Indian press.
