Early life and background

Gayatri Joshi was born on 20 March 1974 in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She grew up in a Marathi family and later moved to Mumbai with her family, where she attended The J.B. Vachha High School in Dadar. Earlier schooling took place at Mount Carmel High School in Nagpur. After finishing school she enrolled at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai and completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Career

Joshi began modelling while she was still at college, starting her professional work in 1996. Over the course of her modelling career she appeared for a range of commercial brands and featured in catalogue and calendar shoots. She also appeared in music videos for established artists and took part in major beauty contests: in 1999 she finished among the top five contestants at Femina Miss India and went on to represent India at the Miss International pageant in Japan in 2000.

Her transition to films came in 2004 when she made her Bollywood debut in Swades, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film brought her wide recognition and several newcomer awards the following year, including honours for best female debut and most promising female newcomer from multiple Indian award bodies.

Following Swades, Joshi stepped away from acting. She has stated that her decision to leave the film industry was linked to her personal priorities after meeting her future husband and wanting to focus fully on her marriage and family.
